One of my, personal reads of the food in the film is a statement of French cultural hegemony, or, more importantly, the director's statements about French socio-cultural acceptance / absorption of the various social classes and colonial groups and the "ideal" cultural France. It also is prevalent in other more subtle marks of social status and class in France- there's cultural participation. It is aligned with costume, living situations, education levels and processes, etc. It's not the only use of food, but it is pretty clearly connected to class markers. The food is absolutely one of the marks of social class at work in the film I'm so glad you mention this.
